A1 English Grammar: 7 Essential Structures to Use Confidently

A1 English grammar

A1 English grammar is not about learning every rule in the English language — it is about mastering a specific, manageable set of structures that allow a learner to say real things in English for the first time. Many Thai adults have studied grammar rules as abstract systems without ever developing the ability to use them naturally in conversation. At ILC Hua Hin, A1 English grammar is always taught in context — through real sentences, real situations, and immediate speaking practice — in private one-to-one sessions with qualified bilingual teachers who understand exactly why certain structures are difficult for Thai speakers and how to explain them clearly. Visit www.ilc.training to find out more, and explore Cambridge English’s adult learning resources for the framework behind ILC’s grammar approach.

What A1 English Grammar Actually Requires

A1 English grammar is intentionally limited. There is no need for conditionals, passive voice, or complex clause structures at this level. At A1, learners need to be able to form basic statements, questions, and negative sentences using a small set of core structures — and mastering these reliably is more valuable than knowing a larger set imperfectly. In private coaching at ILC, A1 English grammar is taught through sentences a learner can immediately use in their real life — not through abstract rule tables or multiple-choice exercises. This ensures that grammar knowledge is always connected to speaking ability, which is where it matters most. Find out more at https://ilc.training/a1-beginner-english-coaching/.

A1 English Grammar: 7 Essential Structures Every Learner Must Master

The first structure is the verb “to be” in all its forms. I am, you are, he is, she is, we are, they are — plus their negative and question forms — is the single most important A1 English grammar structure. It underlies introductions, descriptions, and the most common questions in the language. In private coaching at ILC, “to be” is mastered in the first sessions and extended throughout the programme.

The second structure is present simple for habits and routines. I work, I live, I study, I eat — with their negative forms (I do not work) and question forms (Do you work?) — allows a learner to describe their daily life and interact in the most common conversational situations at A1 level.

The third structure is “have got” and “have” for possession and description. I have a car, I have got two children, do you have a question — this A1 English grammar structure appears constantly in everyday conversation and is essential for describing personal information, possessions, and basic needs.

The fourth structure is there is and there are. There is a hospital near here, there are three bedrooms — this structure is essential for describing places, giving basic directions, and explaining the contents or features of a location. It is frequently used in workplace and hospitality settings in Hua Hin.

The fifth structure is basic question formation with question words. What, where, when, who, how, how much — combined with correct auxiliary verb use — allows a learner to ask the most common questions in English conversation. At A1, the ability to ask and answer questions about personal details is a core can-do statement — which means question formation is not optional at this level, it is foundational. KSE Academy

The sixth structure is simple past tense for describing recent events. Yesterday, last week, this morning — combined with regular past tense verbs (worked, studied, visited) and the verb “to be” in past form (was, were) — gives a learner the language to describe what happened and when, which is one of the most common conversational needs at A1 level.

The seventh structure is basic connecting language. And, but, because, so — these four connectors allow a learner to extend simple sentences into connected ideas, which is what makes A1 communication feel natural rather than telegraphic. In private coaching at ILC, connectors are practised in speaking from the earliest sessions.

At ILC, A1 English grammar is developed through our Preparation, Instruction, and Reinforcement approach — where every structure is taught in context, practised in speaking, and consolidated through between-session writing and speaking tasks. How ILC Hua Hin Makes A1 English Grammar Clear and Immediately Usable

At ILC Hua Hin, A1 English grammar is never taught as an abstract rule — it is always taught as a tool for saying something real. Your bilingual teacher explains every structure in the language that will make it clearest, whether that is English, Thai, or both. Follow us on Facebook for regular grammar tips and updates, or visit www.ilc.training for more. The British Council confirms that grammar taught in context and applied immediately in speaking produces faster acquisition than isolated rule study — and every ILC A1 grammar session is built on this principle.
