A1 English Vocabulary: 7 Essential Topics Every Thai Adult Must Master

A1 English vocabulary

A1 English vocabulary is the foundation of every skill at this level — without a sufficient range of words organised across the right topics, even well-understood grammar cannot produce real communication. At ILC Hua Hin, A1 English vocabulary is always taught in context rather than as isolated lists, in private one-to-one coaching sessions that connect every new word to a real situation in each learner’s daily life. Visit www.ilc.training to find out more about our approach, and explore Cambridge English’s adult learning materials for the topic framework that underpins A1 vocabulary development.

What A1 English Vocabulary Actually Covers

A1 English vocabulary at the CEFR level encompasses approximately 500 to 700 high-frequency words organised across a defined range of everyday topics. These words are not chosen randomly — they represent the language a learner needs to handle the most common, practical situations that arise at the beginning of real-world English communication.

At A1, a learner should be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases aimed at satisfying concrete needs — and the vocabulary required to do this is organised around familiar, predictable, real-world topics rather than abstract or academic language. KSE Academy

In private coaching at ILC, A1 English vocabulary is always introduced through real sentences, practised immediately in speaking, and revisited in subsequent sessions to build long-term retention. Find out more at https://ilc.training/a1-beginner-english-coaching/.

A1 English Vocabulary: The 7 Essential Topics Every Thai Adult Must Master

The first topic is personal information and introductions. Name, age, nationality, occupation, address, phone number, email — the vocabulary needed to introduce yourself, fill in a simple form, and respond to basic questions about your identity is the starting point of all A1 English communication. In private coaching at ILC, this vocabulary is practised until it is automatic under all conditions.

The second topic is family and relationships. Mother, father, husband, wife, son, daughter, brother, sister, friend, colleague — this A1 English vocabulary appears in almost every social situation and is frequently the second topic raised in any real English conversation after personal introductions.

The third topic is daily routines and time. Morning, afternoon, evening, wake up, eat, work, study, sleep — combined with days of the week, months of the year, and basic time expressions, this vocabulary allows a learner to describe their typical day and understand simple schedules and instructions.

The fourth topic is food and eating. Menu, restaurant, coffee, water, rice, I would like, please, thank you, how much — this A1 English vocabulary is immediately useful for Thai adults who work in or near Hua Hin’s tourism sector, and it produces visible, real-world results from the very first sessions.

The fifth topic is places and directions. Hotel, hospital, school, market, bank, airport — combined with turn left, turn right, straight ahead, near, and how far, this vocabulary gives learners the language to navigate English-language environments and assist English-speaking visitors with basic directional requests.

The sixth topic is shopping and numbers. How much, too expensive, I will take it, do you have, size, colour — combined with confident use of numbers from 1 to 1,000 and basic currency expressions, this A1 English vocabulary enables real transactions in tourist-facing and commercial environments.

The seventh topic is feelings and health. Happy, tired, sick, fine, well, headache, doctor, medicine — this vocabulary is practical, frequently needed, and particularly important for Thai adults who work in hospitality or healthcare-adjacent roles.

At ILC, A1 English vocabulary across all seven topics is built through our Preparation, Instruction, and Reinforcement approach — with every topic introduced in context, practised in speaking, and consolidated through between-session tasks. How ILC Hua Hin Builds A1 English Vocabulary That Sticks

At ILC Hua Hin, no A1 English vocabulary word is ever taught in isolation. Every word is introduced in a sentence, used in a real situation, and practised in speaking before the session moves on. This approach consistently produces faster, more durable vocabulary retention than any word list study. Follow us on Facebook for tips and updates, or visit www.ilc.training to find out more. The British Council confirms that vocabulary learned in meaningful context is retained far more reliably than vocabulary memorised from lists — and this principle shapes every ILC A1 vocabulary session.
