Which A2 English Grammar Structures Does Every Thai Adult Learner Need to Master?
A2 English grammar is not about knowing every rule in the English language — it is about mastering the specific structures that allow a learner to communicate naturally across the full range of A2 everyday situations. Many Thai adults have encountered A2 grammar in school settings but never developed the ability to use these structures accurately in real, spontaneous communication. At ILC Hua Hin, A2 English grammar is always taught in context — through real sentences, real situations, and immediate speaking practice — in private one-to-one sessions with qualified bilingual teachers who understand exactly why specific structures are challenging for Thai speakers. Visit www.ilc.training to find out more, and explore Cambridge English’s adult learning resources for the framework that underpins ILC’s grammar approach.
What A2 English Grammar Covers at This Level
A2 English grammar extends significantly beyond A1. While A1 focused on present simple, “to be”, and basic question formation, A2 English grammar requires a wider range of tenses, more complex sentence structures, and the ability to express past experiences, future plans, and basic opinions.
At A2 level, grammar targets include past tenses, future forms, comparatives, modal verbs for possibility and obligation, and basic question structures — all of which are taught in context using real-world situations so that grammar knowledge immediately produces usable communication ability. In private coaching at ILC, every A2 English grammar structure is introduced through a sentence the learner can use immediately — removing the gap between knowing a rule and being able to apply it. Find out more at https://ilc.training/a2-elementary-english-coaching/.
A2 English Grammar: The 7 Essential Structures Every Learner Must Master
The first structure is past simple for describing completed events. Yesterday I worked, last week I went, this morning I spoke — past simple is the most important A2 English grammar structure because it unlocks the ability to describe personal experience, which is the foundation of most real social interaction in English.
The second structure is past continuous for describing ongoing past situations. I was working when you called, we were eating at the restaurant — past continuous at A2 level allows a learner to describe the context of past events, which makes storytelling more natural and more interesting. In private coaching at ILC, past continuous is practised through real conversations about the learner’s recent experiences.
The third structure is going to and will for expressing future plans and predictions. I am going to visit Bangkok next month, I think it will rain this afternoon — these two future forms serve different communicative functions and both appear in everyday A2 conversation. In one-to-one sessions at ILC, future forms are practised through authentic speaking activities about real plans and predictions.
The fourth structure is comparative and superlative adjectives. My job is more interesting than my previous one, this is the best coffee I have ever had — comparatives and superlatives are A2 English grammar essentials for expressing opinions, making choices, and describing the world in more detailed terms.
The fifth structure is modal verbs for ability, permission, and obligation. Can, could, must, should, have to — these modals allow a learner to express what they can do, what they need to do, what they are allowed to do, and what they recommend. In private coaching at ILC, modal verbs are taught through real situations that require each function.
The sixth structure is present perfect for linking past and present. I have worked here for three years, I have never visited London — present perfect at A2 level is introduced for its most common uses before being extended more fully at B1. In bilingual coaching at ILC, your teacher explains the concept of present perfect in Thai first, removing the confusion that this structure consistently causes for Thai learners.
The seventh structure is basic relative clauses. The man who works at reception, the hotel where we stayed last year — relative clauses extend A2 sentence length and complexity, signal a higher level of language range, and appear consistently in reading, listening, and writing tasks. In private coaching at ILC, relative clauses are introduced through real sentences from the learner’s own life.
