B1 English Visa: 6 Essential Facts You Must Know Before You Apply
B1 English visa requirements affect more people than most applicants realise — and getting them wrong can delay or derail an application entirely. Whether you are applying for UK settlement, a spouse visa extension, or British citizenship, understanding what the B1 English visa standard requires — and how to prove you meet it — is essential preparation. Under the UK immigration system, the B1 English standard applies at specific stages and on specific routes, most commonly where an applicant is progressing towards long-term residence or British citizenship. British Council EspañaAt ILC Hua Hin, we prepare learners for exactly this standard every week. What the B1 English Visa Standard Actually Requires
The B1 English visa requirement is not a general proficiency standard. It is a specific, tested, formally assessed level that must be proved through an approved qualification from an approved provider.
Where a test is required, it needs to be a Secure English Language Test (SELT) taken with an approved provider on an approved test at an approved test location — and for many settlement and nationality applications, that is a speaking and listening test at B1 level. British Council España
This means that general English improvement or informal conversational ability is not sufficient. You need a recognised qualification that specifically demonstrates B1. Our English Level Test will show you how close you are to that standard right now.
B1 English Visa: The 6 Essential Facts You Must Know
The first fact is that B1 applies to a wide range of UK visa routes. Most applicants applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain after a qualifying period are required to meet the B1 English language requirement — this applies across a wide range of routes including Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder, and family routes under Appendix FM. The second fact is that the requirement is for speaking and listening only at settlement stage. Unlike academic English qualifications, the B1 English visa requirement for most settlement applications focuses specifically on spoken and listening ability — not writing or reading. This affects how you should prepare.
The third fact is that your test must come from an approved provider. Cambridge English qualifications, Trinity College London, Pearson, and a small number of other bodies are approved. Tests from unapproved providers — regardless of how rigorous they are — will not be accepted by the Home Office.
The fourth fact is that the English requirement is changing. From 26 March 2027, the English language requirement for many settlement routes will rise from B1 to B2. KSE Academy If your settlement application falls on or after this date, you will need to demonstrate upper-intermediate English — one full CEFR level above the current B1 standard. Preparing now at B1 and then progressing to B2 with ILC is the most efficient way to stay ahead of this change.
The fifth fact is that B1 is still the current requirement for most applications made before the 2027 deadline. Settlement applications currently require English language competency at B1 CEFR level and successful completion of the Life in the UK test. House of Commons Library If you are applying before March 2027, B1 remains your target — and preparing for it now is the right decision.
The sixth fact is that passing a B1 English exam with ILC gives you a qualification that is valid for immigration purposes. Cambridge B1 Preliminary is an approved qualification recognised by the Home Office when obtained from an approved test centre. ILC Hua Hin is an authorised Cambridge examination centre, which means the qualification you earn here is fully valid for visa and settlement purposes.
At ILC, B1 preparation for visa applicants follows our three-stage approach: Preparation, where we assess your current speaking and listening level; Instruction, where we build each skill to the required standard; and Reinforcement, where we consolidate through timed practice and mock exam conditions.
