Most learners prepare for the B1 English exam without ever stopping to ask a simple but crucial question — what is the B1 level examiner actually looking for? Knowing the answer changes how you prepare. It shifts your focus from general English practice to targeted performance, and that shift can be the difference between a pass and a fail. At ILC Hua Hin, understanding the examiner’s perspective is built into every preparation programme from day one. Start with our English Level Test to find out how close you already are to meeting the standard — and read the official Cambridge English assessment guidance to understand what Cambridge expects at this level.
What a B1 Level Examiner Is Trained to Assess
A B1 level examiner does not mark you on whether you sound like a native speaker. That is not what the exam is designed to test. What the examiner is looking for is evidence that you can use English independently and effectively in real-world situations — on paper and in speech. Cambridge examiners must prove each year, through a certification process, that they are competent to assess, and they are regularly monitored during live testing sessions. B1 Level Examiner Criteria: The 5 Essential Things They Look For
The first thing a B1 level examiner looks for is content. In writing, this means you have answered the question fully and given the reader all the information they need. Writing is marked against four assessment criteria, each carrying a maximum of five marks, and the content criterion focuses on whether you have answered the question and whether the reader would have all the information they need. Cambridge English In speaking, content means your answers are relevant, developed, and connected to the question asked.
The second criterion is communicative achievement. This is about using language in a way that is appropriate for the task and the audience. An email should sound like an email. A story should engage the reader. A spoken answer should be clear and easy to follow. The examiner is asking: does this candidate communicate like an independent user of English?
The third criterion is organisation. In writing, this means your text has a clear structure — an opening, a middle, and a conclusion — with ideas linked logically. In speaking, examiners assess discourse management, looking at whether candidates speak at length with coherence and relevance, and whether their ideas are easy to follow. Text InspectorRambling, repetitive, or disjointed responses lose marks here regardless of grammatical accuracy.
The fourth criterion is language. Marks of 0 to 5 are given for each of the following criteria: Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation, and Language. Wikipedia At B1, the examiner is not expecting perfection. They are looking for a sufficient range of vocabulary and grammatical structures to communicate clearly, with errors that do not prevent understanding. Simple but accurate is better than ambitious but incomprehensible.
The fifth thing a B1 level examiner assesses in the speaking paper is pronunciation. This does not mean a perfect accent. It means clear, consistent delivery that the listener can follow without effort. Stress, rhythm, and intonation all play a role, and they are assessed throughout the speaking test, not just in one part.
At ILC, we use Cambridge’s own assessment scales during preparation — not generic speaking and writing practice. Our approach moves through three stages: Preparation, where we identify which criteria your current performance falls short on; Instruction, where we target each criterion systematically; and Reinforcement, where we use timed practice and detailed feedback to consolidate your performance.
