Cambridge B1 Preliminary Explained: 7 Essential Facts About Format and Scoring

Cambridge B1 Preliminary is one of the most widely recognised English qualifications in the world — and one of the most misunderstood. Many learners sign up without fully understanding what the exam involves, how it is scored, or what a passing mark actually looks like. Getting clear on these facts before you start preparing makes a significant difference to your results. At ILC Hua Hin, we prepare learners for this exam every week, and the first step is always the same — take our English Level Test to confirm you are working at the right level before committing to a preparation programme. The official Cambridge English qualification page is also an essential reference for anyone starting their preparation.

What Cambridge B1 Preliminary Tests and Why It Matters

Cambridge B1 Preliminary is an intermediate-level qualification designed for learners who have moved beyond the basics and need proof of practical, everyday English ability. The exam has four components developed to test English reading and writing, listening, and speaking. Cambridge English Each component carries equal weight, meaning no single skill can be ignored. The exam is available in both paper-based and computer-based formats, and both versions test identical content to the same standard.

What makes Cambridge B1 Preliminary significant is its international recognition. B1 Preliminary demonstrates language proficiency at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), and many higher education institutions around the world accept it as an indication of English language proficiency. Tracktest It is also a stepping stone to higher Cambridge qualifications including B2 First, C1 Advanced, and C2 Proficiency. Our English Level Testwill tell you whether you are ready to begin B1 preparation or whether you need more foundation work first.

Cambridge B1 Preliminary: The 7 Essential Facts About Format and Scoring

Fact one: the exam has four papers. Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking are each assessed separately. The full exam lasts 140 minutes in total, with the speaking test sometimes scheduled on a different day depending on the exam centre. Engxam

Fact two: each paper is worth 25% of your total score. There is no paper that counts for more than another. A strong performance in speaking can compensate for a weaker writing score, and vice versa.

Fact three: scores are reported on the Cambridge English Scale. Examinees receive individual scores for each of the four papers and a composite score ranging from 100 to 170. Wikipedia This means you receive detailed feedback on every skill, not just a pass or fail result.

Fact four: the pass mark is 140. A score of 140 or above is considered a pass and earns the B1 Preliminary certificate, which corresponds to B1 level on the CEFR. Engxam Scoring between 120 and 139 results in an A2 certificate, while scoring 160 or above earns a B2 certificate — meaning strong candidates can exceed the target level in the same sitting.

Fact five: the certificate is valid for life. Unlike IELTS, which expires after two years, the Cambridge English certificate does not have an expiry date — though universities, colleges, and employers can decide how long they will accept results for their own purposes. HKU SPACE

Fact six: the reading paper has six parts. These include multiple-choice questions, matching tasks, and fill-in-the-blank exercises. You need to demonstrate that you can read signs, articles, and notices and extract both general meaning and specific detail.

Fact seven: the writing paper requires two short texts of around 100 words each. One is always an email response. The second is either an article or a story. Both tasks assess vocabulary range, grammatical accuracy, and organisational ability.

At ILC, our preparation follows a structured three-stage process: Preparation, where we assess your current level and identify gaps across all four skills; Instruction, where we build each skill systematically using exam-format materials; and Reinforcement, where we consolidate learning through timed practice and mock papers.
