The speaking component of Cambridge Flyers is the most demanding spoken interaction in the entire Cambridge Young Learners series. At A2 level, children are expected to describe pictures in detail, compare two scenes and identify differences, respond to examiner questions across a range of familiar topics, and sustain a real conversation in English that goes well beyond single-word or short-phrase responses. Cambridge Flyers speaking at ILC Hua Hin is developed through private lessons where every child gets the practice time, individual feedback, and consistent encouragement they need to perform at this level with genuine confidence. Within the Cambridge Primary Daytime Learning Programme, spoken English is central to every lesson from day one.
What the Flyers Speaking Test Demands
The Cambridge Flyers speaking test is longer and more interactive than those at Starters and Movers. Children use a set of picture cards to describe scenes, find differences, and respond to examiner questions about familiar and some unfamiliar topics. They are expected to produce extended responses, use a range of A2 vocabulary and grammar, and maintain a conversation with appropriate fluency and accuracy.
At ILC, preparation for this component is embedded throughout every lesson because spoken English is practised in every lesson from the very beginning. By the time children sit the test, they have been doing this naturally for weeks — the format holds no surprises and the only task is to demonstrate what they genuinely know.
Why Private Lessons Produce the Strongest Speakers at A2
The private lesson model is more important at the Flyers speaking level than at any other point in the series. In a large class, a child might produce a few sentences of spoken English per lesson. In a one-to-one or small-group session at ILC, speaking constitutes a far greater proportion of every session, and the quality of feedback on every utterance is incomparably more useful.
Every child who works at Flyers level at ILC has a distinct speaking profile. Some speak fluently but make grammatical errors they are not aware of. Others speak accurately but hesitantly. Private teachers identify these profiles quickly and build every lesson around addressing them directly. Cambridge English and British Council research both identify consistent exposure to authentic spoken language as one of the most powerful inputs for speaking development in young learners.
Keeping Speaking Practice Rich and Varied
British Council Primary Plus communication activities and National Geographic Trailblazer discussion prompts give children a varied and engaging diet of spoken English practice throughout the programme. A child who is genuinely interested in what they are discussing speaks more, takes more risks with language, and remembers what they have practised far better. This is why ILC teachers take considerable care with the quality and variety of materials they use at this level.
Progress in Cambridge Flyers speaking is tracked throughout the programme and reported to parents weekly. For additional information on general English support alongside the main programme, general English options are available at ILC.
