Boost Your Score: 3 Tips from IELTS FLEX Weekend

Tip 1 – Master the “Personal Story Arc”

In late 2025, examiners are paying even closer attention to how naturally candidates move from the question to a meaningful, personal answer. Instead of giving short, factual responses, practise developing a “personal story arc” — a short narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. For example, if asked about a memorable journey, start with when and where, then explain what happened, and finish with how you felt and what you learned. This structure shows fluency, sequencing, and cohesion, while allowing for richer vocabulary and varied grammar.

Tip 2 – Precision with “Active Vocabulary Sets”

From August 2025 onwards, IELTS speaking tests are rewarding candidates who can deploy precise, topic-specific vocabulary sets without hesitation. This means you need “active vocabulary” — words you can use instantly in conversation — not just passive recognition. For instance, if the topic is climate change, avoid vague terms like “bad weather” and instead use precise terms such as “carbon footprint,” “renewable energy,” or “mitigation strategies.” Our IELTS FLEX Weekend programme focuses on targeted vocabulary drills that match current IELTS trends, so you’re ready for the most common high-scoring topics.

Tip 3 – Controlled Pauses and “Examiner-Friendly” Delivery

Recent examiner reports show that many candidates in 2025 lose marks for speaking either too fast or too slow. The highest scorers have mastered controlled pauses — brief, natural breaks that give them time to think while making their speech sound confident and measured. Instead of filling pauses with “um” or “you know,” use silent pauses or linking phrases to hold your place. For example: “That’s an interesting question… let me think… I’d say…” This technique makes your delivery sound reflective rather than hesitant.
