B1 Grammar Errors: 7 Critical Mistakes Thai Learners Make and How to Fix Them

B1 grammar errors follow predictable patterns for Thai learners — and predictable patterns have predictable solutions. At ILC Hua Hin, we see the same seven errors in writing and speaking tasks week after week. Identifying them is the first step. Fixing them before the Cambridge B1 Preliminary exam is what changes your score. Take our English Level Test to identify which B1 grammar errors are costing you marks right now, and visit Test English’s B1 grammar exercises to begin practising targeted corrections immediately.

Why B1 Grammar Errors Are So Damaging at This Level

B1 grammar errors do not just affect the language criterion in writing — they affect communicative achievement, organisation, and spoken fluency across every paper. An error that appears once in a writing task might be overlooked. An error that appears repeatedly tells the examiner that the structure has not been acquired.

At B1 level, language is best learned in context rather than through isolated rule-learning — and errors that become habits through repetitive incorrect practice are significantly harder to correct than errors caught and addressed early. KSE Academy

This is why targeted error correction from a qualified teacher is so valuable at this stage. Take our English Level Test to see which B1 grammar errors your current performance is producing most frequently.

B1 Grammar Errors: The 7 Critical Mistakes and How to Fix Them

The first error is confusing present perfect and past simple. Thai learners frequently use past simple where present perfect is required — “I went to London three times” instead of “I have been to London three times.” The fix is to practise the contrast between these two tenses in context until the distinction becomes automatic.

The second error is missing the subject in a sentence. Thai sentence structure does not always require an explicit subject, but English does. Sentences like “Is very difficult to study” are a common B1 grammar error. The fix is to build the habit of checking every sentence for a clear subject before submitting.

The third error is incorrect preposition use. “Discuss about”, “arrive to”, “depend of” — these are persistent B1 grammar errors that accumulate across a writing task and consistently reduce the language score. The fix is to learn prepositions in fixed phrases rather than applying rules.

The fourth error is using the wrong conditional form. Mixing “If I would have” with first conditional structures is one of the most frequent B1 grammar errors in writing tasks. The fix is to memorise the if-clause and main clause structure for each conditional type separately before combining them.

The fifth error is overusing simple present. Thai learners often default to present simple for all situations, including those that require past, perfect, or continuous forms. The fix is to practise writing tasks that specifically require a range of tenses — stories, emails about past events, and descriptions of ongoing situations.

The sixth error is incorrect use of articles. Missing or incorrect articles — “a” versus “the”, or no article at all — are B1 grammar errors that appear frequently in Thai learners’ writing. The fix is to practise article use through reading authentic English texts and noticing patterns in context.

The seventh error is incorrect word order in questions. “Where you went?” instead of “Where did you go?” is a common B1 grammar error in speaking tasks. The fix is to practise question formation drills until auxiliary verbs and subject-verb inversion become instinctive.

At ILC, B1 grammar errors are identified and targeted through our three-stage approach: a Preparation phase where we assess your specific error patterns across writing and speaking; an Instruction phase where each error type is addressed systematically; and a Reinforcement phase where accuracy is built through timed practice and real-time correction. Book a Consultation or Assessment to find out which errors your programme would target first.
