A reliable B1 grammar guide to conditionals is one of the most useful tools any intermediate learner can have. Conditionals appear in every part of the Cambridge B1 Preliminary exam — in reading texts, listening recordings, writing tasks, and speaking discussions. Many learners know what conditionals are in theory but consistently make errors when using them under pressure. At ILC Hua Hin, conditionals are a core part of every B1 grammar programme. What This B1 Grammar Guide Covers and Why Conditionals Matter
This B1 grammar guide focuses on conditionals because they are one of the most consistently tested structures in the Cambridge B1 Preliminary exam — and one of the most consistently misused by Thai learners.
The Cambridge B1 Preliminary grammar list includes both second and third conditionals, alongside a broader range of conditional and hypothetical structures used in everyday communication. Wikipedia
Getting conditionals right earns marks in both the writing language criterion and the speaking grammatical range criterion. Take our English Level Test to see whether your current conditional use is accurate enough to pass.
B1 Grammar Guide: 5 Proven Ways to Use Conditionals Correctly
The first way is to master the zero conditional for facts and general truths. The zero conditional uses present simple in both clauses — “If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.” It appears in reading texts and is the foundation for understanding all other conditional forms.
The second way is to use the first conditional for real and likely situations. The first conditional uses present simple in the if-clause and will in the main clause. It appears regularly in speaking tasks when discussing plans, consequences, and future possibilities — and errors here are immediately noticeable to the examiner.
The third way is to use the second conditional for hypothetical situations. The second conditional uses past simple in the if-clause and would in the main clause — it is used to talk about imaginary or unlikely situations in the present or future, and appears consistently in Part 3 and Part 4 of the B1 speaking test when discussing hypothetical scenarios. The fourth way is to avoid mixing conditional forms. The most common B1 grammar error with conditionals is mixing the if-clause and main clause from different conditional types — for example, “If I would have more time, I will study more.” This error costs marks in both writing and speaking and is one of the first things ILC teachers identify and correct.
The fifth way is to practise conditionals in the context of exam tasks. Writing a short email that includes a first conditional recommendation, or answering a speaking question that requires a second conditional opinion, is worth more than any number of isolated grammar exercises.
At ILC, conditionals are covered through our three-stage approach: a Preparation phase where we identify which conditional types are causing errors; an Instruction phase where each form is taught in context using Cambridge exam tasks; and a Reinforcement phase where conditionals are practised in timed writing and speaking activities with immediate feedback.
