Why B1 Reading Skills Go Beyond General Reading Ability
B1 reading skills in the exam context require three things that general reading ability alone does not provide: knowledge of each task type, a clear strategy for each part, and the speed to work through 32 questions in 45 minutes.
Reading is one of the most neglected language skills in exam preparation — candidates tend to be more concerned about speaking and listening, but reading accounts for 25% of the total B1 Preliminary score and demands specific skills that must be practised deliberately. Cambridge English

B1 Reading Skills: The 5 Essential Techniques to Find Answers Quickly
The first technique is scanning. Scanning means moving your eyes quickly through a text to locate a specific piece of information — a name, a date, a number — without reading every word. This B1 reading skill is essential in Parts 2 and 3, where you need to locate specific detail efficiently rather than reading the whole text in full.
The second technique is skimming. Skimming means reading quickly for general meaning — getting the main idea of a paragraph or text without processing every word. This B1 reading skill is most valuable at the start of Parts 3 and 4, where understanding the overall structure of the text helps you locate answers more efficiently.
The third technique is reading for inference. Part 3 of the B1 reading test requires detailed comprehension including gist, inference, and understanding of the writer’s attitude and opinion — not just the ability to locate facts. HKU SPACE This technique involves understanding what the writer implies rather than what they state directly — a skill that requires regular reading practice at B1 level to develop reliably.
The fourth technique is understanding distractor answers. In multiple choice tasks, the wrong answers are designed to look plausible. Strong B1 reading skills include the ability to identify why a distractor is wrong — usually because it uses a word from the text in a different context, or makes a claim that is almost but not quite accurate. Practising this technique with past papers makes it significantly easier on exam day.
The fifth technique is understanding cohesion in Part 4. Part 4 of the B1 reading test requires candidates to choose the correct sentence to fill each of five gaps in a text — a task that tests understanding of how a coherent and well-structured text is formed. British Council España This B1 reading skill requires awareness of connecting language, pronoun reference, and logical flow — and it is one of the most trainable skills in the entire reading paper.
At ILC, B1 reading skills are developed through our three-stage approach: a Preparation phase where we identify which task types and techniques your reading performance is weakest in; an Instruction phase where each technique is taught explicitly and practised with exam materials; and a Reinforcement phase where timed full papers are completed and reviewed in detail.
