B1 Speaking Preparation: 7 Proven Steps to Ace Every Part of the Test

B1 speaking preparation is most effective when it targets each of the four test parts individually — because each part tests a different speaking skill and requires a different approach. Many candidates prepare for speaking in general without ever practising the specific tasks the exam actually involves. At ILC Hua Hin, B1 speaking preparation is structured around all four parts of the Cambridge B1 Preliminary speaking test from the very first session. Take our English Level Test to find out where your speaking stands right now, and visit ESL Lounge’s B1 speaking practice page for free practice tests covering all four parts at exactly the right level.

What Effective B1 Speaking Preparation Covers

Effective B1 speaking preparation covers all four parts of the test — Part 1 personal questions, Part 2 photo description, Part 3 collaborative discussion, and Part 4 follow-up opinion questions — as well as the four assessed criteria that run across the entire test. The four parts of the B1 speaking test require you to answer questions about yourself, describe a colour photograph for one minute, make and respond to suggestions while negotiating agreement, and discuss likes, dislikes, experiences, and opinions. Each part requires preparation, and no part should be neglected. Take our English Level Test to identify which parts of the test your current B1 speaking preparation is targeting most — and which are being overlooked.

B1 Speaking Preparation: The 7 Proven Steps to Ace Every Part

The first step is to understand the format of all four parts before you begin practising. Knowing exactly what each part requires — and what the examiner is assessing in each one — removes the element of surprise and allows your B1 speaking preparation to be targeted from the start.

The second step is to prepare a vocabulary bank for the seven most common B1 speaking topics. Travel, work, technology, daily life, food, family, and hobbies all appear across Parts 1 and 4. Knowing the right words before you need them is one of the most efficient things you can do in your B1 speaking preparation.

The third step is to practise Part 2 photo descriptions daily. Set a timer for one minute and describe a photograph without stopping — covering the main subject, background details, location, and what you think is happening. This is the exact task format of Part 2 and daily practice builds the sustained, coherent speech the discourse management criterion requires.

The fourth step is to practise making and responding to suggestions for Part 3. Part 3 requires you to make and respond to suggestions, discuss alternatives, and negotiate agreement — and effective B1 speaking preparation for this part means practising the language of suggestions, agreement, disagreement, and compromise until it feels natural. The fifth step is to practise expressing and justifying opinions for Part 4. Part 4 is a follow-up discussion where the examiner asks both candidates for their opinions on the topic from Part 3. B1 speaking preparation for this part means building the ability to express a clear opinion, support it with a reason, and develop it with an example — consistently, across any topic.

The sixth step is to complete full speaking test simulations regularly. Once a week, work through all four parts in sequence with a timer, a teacher or study partner in the examiner role, and recording for self-review. This is the most direct form of B1 speaking preparation and the most reliable indicator of genuine readiness.

The seventh step is to get criterion-referenced feedback after every simulation. Knowing that you “spoke well” is not useful preparation information. Knowing that your discourse management score is band 4 but your interactive communication is band 2 gives you a specific, actionable target for your next session.

At ILC, B1 speaking preparation is structured through our three-stage approach: a Preparation phase where we assess your current performance across all four parts and all four criteria; an Instruction phase where each part is targeted with specific techniques and practice; and a Reinforcement phase where full simulations are conducted and reviewed against the Cambridge band descriptors.
